REFLECTION TOPIC 2: DESIGN AND DESIGN DOCUMENTATION

melissanasiphi

In this reflection topic, i will be identifying and discussing parts of a completed MIP work that would have fallen into the perspective categories of design and design documentation, done by a previous advanced diploma student from Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). The perspective categories are as follows:

Site investigation and evaluation

Meeting with relevant authorities

Preparation of schematic and design development drawings

Checking design proposal against statutory requirements

Preparation of budgets, estimates, cost plans and feasibility studies

Nicole O"reilly did a major integrated project on a wine visitor's centre. The intervention is to attract young people to a heritage site. In assumption, once they relate to the building, the heritage will be acknowledged and

hopefully appreciated.

I identified the above site analysis as part of the site investigation process.

Site investigation is part of a design process, it is an analysis of the chosen building and area in which the building is located to prepare the site for an upcoming project. the investigation is the key to suitable and economic design because the data collected forms the support of the site assessment and the foundation solutions produced afterwards. This process is found in the begin during the initial planning and should continue throughout construction. Lack of planning and site investigations lead to poor and insufficient foundation solutions of a project.

Meetings are necessary for management and communication, which increases productivity and continuous motivation; they create ideas and initiatives. In this case i identified the above floor plan drawings as part of an early design process, which includes meetings with relevant authorities, in this process relevant authorities are a way forward of a project, they decide whether the design can be approved basing it on the design regulations and the law.

The preparation for both these phases schematic and design development are linked together as one phase leads to another to carry out the design process stage. Schematic drawing phase is the first stage to a design process, it is an analysis of the project site.

The Design development phase is the period of time during which the design for a project takes shape, where the schematics are finalized, construction materials are selected. I identified the above floor plan drawings as schematic drawings, they are basically a written feedback given to a designer, but in this instance to a student for adjustments.

Checking for design proposals against statutory requirements is a process in which a designer's proposal to a client should meet the statutory requirements in certain ways or circumstances, The proposal needs to have design solutions to the building and the area. the above documents clearly state what design proposal are against statutory requirements.

Preparation of a budget, estimates, cost plans and feasibility are the initial start of a project, where the client and the designer outline the budget for the entire project, plan for how the money will be spent, and a breakdown of the items it will be spent on. This stage includes the process of taking of measurements of the site for each space to estimate the budget cost. The above documents are identified costing proposal assignment formulated by Nicole, this process is the fees breakdown for each stage of an interior designer.

I must say i am learning a lot from the MIP work done by Nicole, it actually feels like i have gained some industry experience through studying her work. The way she structured her project is easy for anyone to understand what the project is about, the target market, intervention and how she goes about solving the problems in her chosen building and how people she is targeting will be influenced, educated and feel throughout the space.
